Seven Shelly product films: how the product decides the method

Shelly makes smart home devices - sensors, bulbs, power strips, wall displays. Seven of the films we have made for them are on this site. They all start the same way and almost none of them were produced the same way. This is how we decide.

What stays the same

  • The concept and the script are ours on every Shelly film.
  • We start from a moment in real life where the product does its job, not from the feature list.
  • Script and storyboard are approved before production starts, so changes happen on paper and not in the edit.
  • A typical package is one hero film, three social cuts, 10 to 30 lifestyle images and language versions - German when needed, Italian, French and Polish on some projects.

What changes: the method

The question we ask is simple: what is the hardest thing about showing this product? The answer usually picks the technique.

Wall Display - a screen that has to belong to the room

The Wall Display is a touchscreen that runs the whole smart home from one spot on the wall. We filmed in a rented apartment, on an empty wall, and added the display in 3D afterwards. Live action and 3D.

Flood Gen4 - nothing happens until the floor is wet

A leak sensor is not interesting until there is a leak. We wrote the script around that moment and shot it with practical water effects - real water in front of the camera, not a simulation. Most Shelly projects get three social cuts. This one got five.

Flood S Gen4 - made with AI

The film opens with a joke - the radiator should heat the room, not remodel the floor - and then walks through what the sensor does. It was made with AI-generated footage. The idea and the script were still written by people.

Presence Gen4 - three techniques in one film

A presence sensor knows when a room is occupied and when it is empty, and lets the home react. The film is mostly live action, with a lot of 3D work and a few AI-generated scenes.

Bulbs Gen3 - one film for two bulbs

Duo is for adjustable white light, Multicolor for full color. The script follows light through a day - focused in the morning, warm in the evening, running on its own schedule when you are away. Filmed, with AI-generated scenes mixed into the live footage.

Power Strip 4 Gen4 - where it actually lives

A smart power strip with four sockets you control one by one. The script walks through the places it really ends up - by the bed, under the desk, in a tight workspace - and what each socket does there. Filmed, with 3D work on top.

LoRa - no camera at all

A film for Shelly's LoRa range - long-range wireless devices for places Wi-Fi does not reach. Fully animated. There was no filming on this one: script, design and animation.

What we take from it

  • The technique is chosen after the idea, not before it.
  • Most films end up mixing techniques.
  • AI changed how some scenes get made. It did not change who writes the idea.
